Build Barber Skills. Build Confidence. Build Your Next Chapter.

A clean shave and a smooth taper are the kinds of services that make clients feel their best when they look in the mirror. You could be the barber delivering those results. At Alva Beauty Collective, barbering students learn in a technique-first environment. When you are a student here, you might watch a demonstration up close, then practice it yourself while getting feedback from experienced professionals who help you turn your “almost” into barbershop-ready confidence.

Our Hybrid Barber Program balances flexibility with real hands-on growth. With consistent practice and expert coaching, you can prepare to sit for the California state board exam and work toward starting the next chapter in your story.

Barber Training That Feels Like a Real Shop

Barbering is a hands-on business. Your training should be hands-on, too. Alva Beauty Collective’s program is built for students who want to put the work in and learn a new skill they can use to start the next chapter of their life. Instead of spending most of your time in lectures, our program allows you to spend those in-person hours seeing practical demonstrations and developing your techniques. Eventually, you can practice those skills on real clients in our student barbershop, under the supervision of licensed professionals. It’s work that helps you get comfortable working with real people in a real shop setting, not just cutting hair on a mannequin.

Barber Program Highlights

  • Hybrid flexibility: Complete the theory portion of your required state hours online from home, so studying can fit around work, family, and life.
  • Technique-first class time: In-person sessions are built around demonstrations, hands-on practice, and instructor feedback. We focus on the skills you’ll use on the floor.
  • Barbershop-focused training: Practice core services like cutting and finishing, clipper control, detailing, and grooming so your work becomes consistent and repeatable.
  • Bilingual instruction: Classes are available in English and Spanish (availability may vary by start date).
  • State-approved curriculum: Training aligns with California State Board requirements and is designed to help you prepare to sit for the state board exam.
  • Experienced instructors: Learn from working professionals who coach technique, service flow, and professional standards.
  • Real-client practice opportunities: Build confidence through supervised service experience—all services provided by students under the supervision of licensed professionals.
  • Student support services: Get help beyond technique, including career conversations and interview preparation resources (employment is not guaranteed).

Barber Program FAQs

How long is the Barber Program?

Alva Beauty Collective’s Barber Program is 1,000 clock hours. Your personal completion timeline will depend on your attendance and skill development. The admissions team can help you estimate a timeline for your training during a campus tour.

Do you offer financial aid?

At this time, Alva Beauty Collective does not offer federal financial aid programs. We are in the stages of working toward Title IV eligibility. However, we do offer payment plan options, including weekly and monthly plans, to better help you budget your tuition payments. Reach out to our team to learn more about payment plan options and what that might look like for you.

When do I start working on real clients?

Client-facing work happens as you build up your barbering skills and your instructors feel you are ready to provide services on the shop floor. All services are provided by students under the supervision of licensed professionals. Often, this happens early in the training process, but it’s different for everyone. You can also benefit from hands-on training in our classrooms and on mannequin heads with instructor feedback that will help you get ready to work on real clients.

Enrollment Requirements and Next Steps for the Barber Program

Getting started is easy, and the first step is to come see our school in person. We’ll take you on a tour of the campus so you can see our classrooms and barber shop floor in action. Then you can complete the admissions forms and submit your paperwork. Once admitted, you can pick your start date. Classes start every Monday! To start enrollment, you’ll need:

  • To be at least 16.5 years old (and 17 years old to sit for the state exam)
  • A Social Security or ITIN number
  • A valid state-issued ID or passport
  • A high school diploma OR equivalent OR pass our entrance assessment
